Located in the heart of Sacramento at 1801 Capitol Ave, Zócalo Midtown invites diners on a culinary journey through the vibrant flavors and rich traditions of authentic Mexican cuisine. This Mexican restaurant gracefully balances traditional recipes with a lively, contemporary atmosphere, making every visit an experience to savor.
The menu is a celebration of textures and tastes, featuring standout dishes like the Enchiladas Mole, where tender tortillas are drenched in a deeply complex, velvety mole sauce that perfectly harmonizes sweet, smoky, and spicy notes. The Bean Dip offers a creamy, flavorful start, perfect for sharing alongside freshly made chips and salsa that are constantly replenished, ensuring that each bite remains perfectly crisp and vibrant.
For taco lovers, Zócalo presents a dazzling variety: from the heat-kissed Shrimp Tacos and Baja Fish Tacos with their flaky, light fish fillings to the richly spiced Cochinita Pibil—a southern Mexican classic where achiote-glazed smoked pork shoulder melts on the tongue, accented by pickled red onions and mild habanero salsa. The unique Tacos De Cazuela bring a hearty twist with steak or chicken sautéed alongside house chorizo, onions, mushrooms, and chipotle salsa, all baked casserole-style and served with sides of rice, beans, chips, and salsa for a fulfilling meal.
Complement your meal with freshly prepared appetizers like their zesty Guacamole — bursting with avocado, jalapeño, radish, and queso cotija — or the delicately balanced Ceviche De Guaymas, showcasing fresh fish or shrimp mingled with avocado and housemade hot sauce that tingles the palate. The vibrant flavors continue with dishes like the Salmon Bowl and the richly marinated Carne Asada Tacos, each plate beautifully crafted and a feast for the eyes as much as the taste buds.
To round off your visit, indulge in sweet treats such as Churros & Ice Cream and Flan Churros, paired effortlessly with refreshing cocktails like the ever-popular Blackberry Margarita or a classic Mojito. Many guests highlight these drinks not just for their flavor, but for the convivial spirit they foster, with one delighted diner even noting the margaritas come served in pitchers, perfect for sharing.

Amazing food and amazing ambiance on top of AMAZING staff! Talisa went above and beyond to ensure we had a wonderful time at Zocalo. It was one of our party member’s birthday, and she celebrated her beautifully. I will definitely be coming back here, and we need more Talisas in the world! Make sure you try the cochinita pibil, it’s to die for.
As a Latino couple, we usually avoid restaurants that serve generic Tex-Mex food — but Zócalo truly surprised us! The flavors were authentic and well-balanced, definitely passing our taste test. We were seated right away, and the service throughout the evening was friendly and attentive. The steaks were juicy, tender, and full of flavor, and even the beans stood out — rich and well-seasoned. Overall, a great dining experience that exceeded our expectations. We’ll definitely be back!
It was such a beautiful restaurant with a lot of seating. The service was great, as staff kept coming by and asking if we needed anything or wanted to order more food. Every was plated nicely. Fish tacos were pretty good. Even though I enjoyed the mole enchiladas, I thought they would be the highlight of the meal, but it was my blackberry margarita that won out.
Upon a semi chill Sacramento night, Zócalo proved a place of curious contradictions. Though it professes itself a Mexican restaurant, its décor seems to have wandered through the bazaars of Marrakech before settling here, all ornate lanterns looked most uncertain of their continental loyalties. I half expected a belly dancer to emerge between the tacos. A drink, proudly bearing the Michelin Recommendation, which I took to mean divine sanction caught my attention. Alas, my expectations were betrayed. Whatever celestial palate had approved it must have done so during a moment of distraction, for I found it rather uninspired. The food, however, redeemed the affair which was nothing short of edible poetry, a lively dance upon the tongue, though the portion, I must confess, seemed designed for a man of smaller ambitions. At least the ones we ordered. Parking was an adventure of labyrinthine confusion, not unlike trying to find moral clarity in a Shakespearean subplot. And, dear heavens, I must report with dismay upon the men’s lavatory! Urinals without dividers! One is left to conduct one’s business shoulder to shoulder, as though comrades in a trench. Surely, civilization has advanced far enough to afford a modest partition between gentlemen. Alas, I have but few pictures to commemorate the evening, a most grievous oversight on my part. The dim light, perhaps, conspired with the fine ceviche to distract me. Thus, I am left with mere memory and regret and that might be the most fitting souvenir of all. Am borrowing the first one.
Excellent dining experience. From the hostess to the waiting staff, the service was outstanding. I got same day reservations. My party was seated immediately at 5:30 PM on a Thursday despite the place being rather busy. The chips and salsa/bean dip were regularly refilled, as were our blackberry margaritas. I loved that it came in a pitcher. The guacamole was the best, as were the specialty dinners.
The food was chef's kiss. I ordered the burrito norteño wet and my husband ordered the enchiladas mole, and for dessert we had to try the churros. The service was fantastic. The restaurant itself was beautiful. Oh, and don't sleep on the blackberry margarita - it is soooo good! We will definitely be back!
Amazing food. Amazing service. I went with my mother. The chips for appetizers were nice and hot, a sign they were just made, and the black beans and salsa it came with were great. I ordered the garlic shrimp tacos, and my mom ordered the pozole soup. The tacos were delicious and the pozole was too. For desert we had the flan, which was amazingly sweet and nice to eat, and the churros, which were honestly a disappointment. The churros came with ice cream, so I assume they weren't so heated as to melt it, but it's something I usually like to eat hot. The place is also surprisingly cheap too. We'll worth the price
